On August 1, 2023, our lives were changed forever. What originally presented as vertigo, progressed into a full-blown ischemic attack. Despite being 52 years of age, an active and healthy lifestyle, my husband Clarke suffered a Pontine Stroke.
The creation of a Caring Bridge site on Day 3 was intended as a means to keep hundreds of family, friends, and colleagues updated. We had to dig deep to find something positive - to find the silver lining behind every setback. Each journal entry held us accountable for remaining positive.
As I reflect on the insanity of the situation, this site quickly became more than simply a means to inform. It became a support system. It created a community. It served as an outlet. One of the worst days of our lives became a journey of inspiration and hope, and this site chronicles Clarke's seemingly impossible and miraculous recovery.
During the initial nine days in the neuro unit, Clarke faced immobility and communication challenges following a stroke. The severity and location of the stroke indicated a recovery period of 3-6 months. Subsequently, he underwent four weeks of acute rehab, followed by three months of intensive day rehab at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. Additional therapy included a month of outpatient rehab and 12 neuro rehab sessions.
Within the first few hospitalization days, Clarke's medical expenses exceeded $62,000 in tests alone. Fortunately, our major medical PPO covered 90%, with an out-of-pocket limit of $4,500. With our Aflac Plus Rider, we were spared additional financial strain, crucial as neither of us could work. The $5,000 payout supplemented what major medical didn't cover, allowing for essential modifications to ease Clarke's transition and recovery at home.
